Research Grants

We fund all forms of research but our particular interest is in the early detection and treatment of colorectal cancers, and projects that focus on the well-being of patients receiving treatment. Our resources are limited and therefore we tend to favour projects that have the potential to show fairly immediate benefits.

Applications are invited for two grants of £500 each for innovative research projects relating to the care of colon cancer patients. All applications will be considered with reference to our aims and objectives as a charity, to improve care, treatment and outcomes for people with bowel cancer. To apply, please submit an outline of your project by email.

Closing date for applications: 1st April 2024.

We will also consider applications for ad hoc grants of differing amounts for studies matching the criteria outlined above.

POCFIT Study

CITRuS Study

R-FIT Study: This project is being undertaken by Mr Nick Farkas working with colleagues at the Southern Bowel Cancer Screening Hub. The purpose of the study is to determine the effectiveness of repeated FIT tests for symptomatic patients. If this enables safe triaging of such patients, hard-pressed colonoscopy services can then be used more effectively with no detriment to patient care and diagnosis. (FIT is the standard test used for screening the general population via the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.)

GUTS is a National Institute for Health & Care Research (NIHR) non-commercial Partner. This means the studies that we fund may be eligible to access NIHR Clinical Research Network (CRN) support.

The NIHR Research Delivery Network (RDN which has now transitioned from the previous Clinical Research Network) can support research conducted outside of NHS settings. These might include studies running in care homes or in hospices, for instance. The CRN will also be able to better support research into public health, for example in schools and other community settings. This change is a way in which the NIHR is addressing the evolving health and care landscape and the changing needs of people and patients. From April 2024, the CRN is transitioning to a new organisation, the NIHR  Network (RDN).
